movement.

When leaving the Oktoberfest area this Sunday, I was just watching all this movement going on all over the place. Always circulating, always rotating, always climbing, never stopping. Well, sometimes stopping, but starting all over again the other second. For me, the most impressive movement is, still, Barth’s „Olympia Looping“. Conceived already back in 1985, this is not only an always moving roller coaster with over 1,2 km in lengths and over 32 m in height. It’s also a moving phenomenon on its own. Like all carnival rides on the Oktoberfest, this immense structure with over 870 tons of weight (!) is moved from town to town, to all the different festivals and carnivals in Germany, since 23 years. It’s de-constructed and reconstructed over and over again.
Considering how uncomfortable some stationary roller coasters in some amusement parks are, the Olympia Looping has still a great quality of riding: a small wonder despite the heavy transportation exposure for the material. And a fabulous metaphor for the dualism of movement and steadiness, that inheres every great thing and made me endure so long in front of this magnificent construction. It’s what drives me in this world. It’s like the dualism of steady mountains and constant hiking. Or dynamic creations and great, arising results.
Olympia looping is shown at 0:58 (his smaller sister „Alpina Bahn“ at 0:37).
Toller Film!
